Editorial Reviews:

Album Description
2009 studio album from the Grammy-winning singer/songwriter. Since the release of his hit album, Room For Squares, in 2001, Mayer has progressed from a sensitive acoustic-based performer into a full-fledged paparazzi-baiting superstar with acclaimed musical detours into Jazz, Blues and Folk. Battle Studies is yet another milestone for Mayer, containing some of his best work to date. Features the single 'Who Says'.

4 out of 5 stars Why it's good.   March 13, 2010

"Battle Studies" won't take too long to enjoy. The guitar work is excellent, with patches of brilliance here and there. Some of the lyrics are very nice; some very subtle that need focusing on. There is a certain honesty in the songs, a letting go on Mayer's part. Best known for "I'm just a regular person" music are, I think, Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen. Mayer is getting pretty "regular" on some of these songs. It's a pleasure. Many of the songs have parts that you will want to sing along with. That is always a good thing, even though some will call it too radio-like. Another area where some people will criticise is that there are "Mayer signatures." That is, the way he lilts up (music note)at the end of a lyric, the notes he plays in sequence (sometimes)are things he's done before. Yes, sometimes. And if you don't like that about him, I'd like to suggest you just go along with him on it. Let him have his way. What's the harm. You will like this album. If you listen to it 4 times over the course of 4 days, I'd wager you will come to enjoy many of the songs very much.

1 out of 5 stars Another musical offering from our beloved Johnny Boy   March 12, 2010

I've tried my best to be "hip" and learn to accept the God-like status of this guy in the world of mainstream music no matter how many times his singing churns my stomach, but unfortunately I find myself reaching for the barf bag everytime our beloved Johnny Boy opens his mouth to let out that dreadful, phony voice of his. I offer this advice to all those who have suffered as much as myself....

1. Open a new file in your computer.
2. Name it 'John Mayer'.
3. Send it to the Recycle Bin.
4. Empty the Recycle Bin.
5. Your PC will ask you: 'Do you really want to get rid of 'John Mayer?'
6. Firmly Click 'Yes.'
7. Feel better???

GOOD! - Tomorrow we'll do Kid Rock, Taylor Swift, Britney Spears, Kenny Chesney, Rascal Flatts, Justin Timberlake, and American Idol.

1 out of 5 stars First time buying a John Mayer Album   March 11, 2010

I heard so much about how he writes great lyrics. But when I got my album and started to listen I got very dissapointed. There are barely any lyrics in his songs. Most of the songs is just a repeat of the chorus over and over.
The duet with Taylor Swift seemed pointless since you barely notice she was singing as well. Either let her voice be heard on the duet or don't do a duet at all.
Maybe he has made better album then this. But from only listing to this I have no clue why people think he is a great singer/song writer. I don't think he suck but he is nothing special either with this album.
